... the reason we spent £600 on two, 2TB SanDisk Extreme Pro SSDs was for improved performance when editing 4K video in Final Cut Pro X. However we did the tests and it made no difference at all to the speed of Final Cut Pro X or Premiere Pro!

We tested playback speed, render times, FCPX opening times, file import times, file relinking times, export times etc. on both a 2015 and 2019 MacBook Pro. We stored the project media files on a traditional HDD with a file transfer rate of 80 MB/s and for comparison, on an external SSD with a transfer rate 10x faster!

The location of the media files makes no difference as storage speed is not a bottleneck in the video editing workflow. Instead, CPU, GPU and RAM control the speed at which your editing software operates.
